 PRESSURES CONTINUE IN SOUTH AZERBAIJAN
News1The ethnic and human rights violations against Azerbaijanis continue systematically in Iran. According to the report of an institution called Iranian Azerbaijani Defense Agency for Political Prisoners (ADAPP), the oppressive practices of the Iranian Security Units and judicial bodies continued also in August-September.

During the above-mentioned months, practices such as indiscriminate arrests, tortures and maltreatment against the prisoners continued. The reason for a number of arrests was not declared and the prisoners were not allowed to see their lawyers and families. There was no medical service at prisons and the demands of the prisoners for outside medical treatment were not accepted. In Tehran, the health situation of Azerbaijani journalist and human rights defender Said Metinpur, who is in Evin Prison for being sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment, is worrisome. The mentioned individual, who has a heart and lung illness, is not allowed to get medical treatment. The Organization of Journalists Sans Frontiers announced on September 24th that Metinpur was prevented from getting medical treatment which is one of the basic human rights.

The Azerbaijanis who are living in Iran without the right to education in their mother tongue organize peaceful demonstrations every year to protest Iran’s discriminative policies. In response, the Iranian authorities continuously make arrests against those who raise such demands. Journalist Hasan Arak and political activist Ebrahim Dashti from Tabriz are among those detained. The family members of Azerbaijani poet and writer Mahbub Budaghi, who was arrested in August, are very anxious as they cannot get any information about the issue. The Azerbaijani activists called Behruz Alizade, Vadud Saadeti, Rahim Gholami, Hossein Hosseini and Ardeshir Karimi Khiyavi were sentenced to one year imprisonment while Azerbaijani activist called Asgar Akbarzade from Ardebil was sentenced to 5 years of imprisonment.

On the other hand, an Azerbaijani student called Hamed Tofig, who completed the whole examination process in order to become a postgraduate student at Azad University, has not been informed about the results of the examination by now. Following the announcement of the results of the Postgraduate examination for Iran’s State Universities, Amane Gasempur got high marks but was not allowed to register in a postgraduate program. Similarly, Azerbaijani female human rights defender Hakime Sehhat Mosnahr was not accepted to the Azad University as a postgraduate sociology student, without putting forth any reasons, although she had got sufficient marks. Moreover, Azerbaijani activist students called Behzad Jeddi, Shahram Shoghi, and Ebrahim Shahbazi were not accepted as postgraduate students.
