US' ADVISER FOR KURDS BENEFITS FROM OIL REVENUES |
|
The daily New York Times wrote that former Ambassador Peter Woodard Galbraith enabled the approval of the drafts which make the Kurds the only authority controlling the oil fields in Northern Iraq. In the article titled US' Adviser for Kurds Benefits from Oil Revenues, it is stated that the mentioned individual, known to be acting as an adviser for Kurds and maintaining connections with the Norwegian oil company, had made hundreds of millions of dollars. Journalists had revealed that Galbraith was a secret partner of the Norwegian oil company DNO, which runs the Tawke oil field in Dohuk. The Kurdish authorities expressed that they had been informed about the relations of Galbraith with DNO and they still regarded him as a friend of Kurds.
The Central Iraqi Government, on the other hand, has reactions to the business relations of Galbraith. Abdul-Hadi al Hassani, second president of the Oil and Gas Committee in the Iraqi Assembly, said that Galbraith had relations with a company where his financial interests merged with the political ones. Galbraith did not give any information on the financial arrangements and compensations he had concluded with the company, putting forth the secrecy agreements as a pretext. However, his business partner Norwegian businessman Endre Rosjo stated that he himself and Galbraith had a share of 10 % of the Tawke field and possibly other fields, in addition to the compensation paid by the company to them.
Given the political uncertainties, it is very difficult to make an estimation regarding the value of the shares in the Kurdish fields. Are Martin Berntzen, an analyst from Oslo's First Securities Stock Market, expressed that the Tawke field alone had an established reserve of 230 million barrels and this figure would probably go higher as new wells would be drilled, and a share of 5 % was at least equal to 115 million dollars.
Galbraith who worked at the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee during 1979-1993 has a book titled The End of Iraq. The mentioned individual had resigned from his position in the US government in order to become an adviser for the Kurdish leadership after the occupation.
