THE TURKS OF SOUTHERN AZERBAIJAN AND THE WORLD MOTHER TONGUE DAY
News1Southern Azerbaijani Turks in Iran are celebrating February 21 as "The World Mother Tongue Day" so as to advocate their ethnic and cultural rights. As is known, by means of UNESCO, the UN has declared 2008 as the "World Mother Tongue Year" so as to underline the right to use the mother tongue. 30 million Azerbaijani Turks express their demands for education in their mother tongue in this significant day because education in one's mother tongue is an indispensable right. Following the Islamic Revolution of Iran in 1979, Southern Azerbaijanis have been forced to receive education in Farsi, in violation of the articles 15 and 19 of the Iranian Constitution. The word "Turk" has almost become a nightmare for the Azerbaijani youth. Educators and certain circles of the society have the responsibility to publicize this issue to the world public opinion.

Mother tongue is one of the most important elements of identity of humanity. Mother tongue should be respected and efforts should be paid to protect this value. However, Iranian leadership does not give abandon its oppressive practices aiming to eradicate the mother tongues of the Southern Azerbaijanis living in the country. Secondary education buildings are in a poor condition in Tabriz. Level of success of students is very low in regions where non-Iranians are residing. New schools are not built despite the needs. The lack of research budgets for universities in Southern Azerbaijan is another important problem. Stores bearing Turkish signs and inscriptions are closed down. The people of Southern Azerbaijan cannot enjoy their historical and cultural wealth. They are banned to commemorate their national heroes. For this reason, hundreds of Southern Azerbaijanis are in prison. As a result of conscious economy policies, poverty prevails in Southern Azerbaijan and drug abuse is on the rise because of unemployment.

Since the protection of human rights is one of the duties of the international public opinion, the UN and the EU have to fulfill their responsibilities
In this framework, necessary steps should be taken in the following fields:

- The provision of the right to receive education in the mother tongue,
- Opening cultural centers so as to revive the Turkish culture,
- The Azerbaijan region of Iran should be granted autonomy,
- New investments should be carried out in the region and unemployment has to be tackled
