A FOREIGNER HAND IN THE INCIDENTS IN IRAN? |
|
Mustafa TOMBULOGLU
(Yorturk Cultural and Art Magazine Jan/Feb 2010)
Domestic political turmoil, which began right after the Presidential
elections held in June 2009 in Iran is increasingly deteriorating.
Conservative faction is not only questioning the legitimacy of the
Ahmedinejad administration but also the attitude and the powers of
Religious Leader Khamaney. According to the press, the administration
thinks that there are 60 institutions and organizations behind the
escalating street protests. Therefore, a list is being prepared
regarding the various institutions, which are reported to be guiding
masses in political and social incidents. Authorities request that
state officials as well as the people avoid any contact with these
institutions, which are reported to be engaged in a psychological war
against the Islamic Republic.
The following are among the institutions and organizations mostly
active in the US and England: International Human Rights Watch, Open
Society Institution, Woodrow Wilson Foundation, Freedom House,
National Endowment for Democracy (NED), National Democratic Institute
(NDI), National Republican Institute (NRI), Democracy in Eastern
Europe (IDEE), East Europe Democratic Center (EEDC), Ford Foundation,
Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Hoover Institution at
Stanford University, the UK Wilton Park, the Smith Richardson
Foundation, the US National Defense University and the US New
Foundation.
Press reports indicating that 55 million Dollars were allocated to the
disposal of the US Administration by the US Congress in November 2009
for announcing and prevention of the human rights violations in
Iran, are not going unnoticed. It is stated that, as a result of the
investigation carried out by the Iranian intelligence on the issue,
numerous domestic and foreign institutions engaged in psychological
war have been identified. Among them are Voice of America,
broadcasting in Persian; BBC; Mujahedeen Al-Khalk; Persian TV channels
Saltanat/ Followers of Shah, Pars and Channel 1; Radio Farda, Radio
Zamane and some radio channels broadcasting from Israel.
A while ago Robert Bear, one of the former CIA members, had claimed
that the Bush Administration aimed at triggering civil war in Iran in
order to replace the Iranian regime and further stated that the
Washington Administration had taken advantage of Jandullah to collect
intelligence on Iran and to initiate a Shiite- Sunni conflict in the
country. Major General Seyid Yahya Rahim Safawi, advisor on military
affairs to Religious Mentor Khamaney, had stated that CIA and the
intelligence services of some of the neighboring countries supported
some regime dissident organizations like the Jandullah and provided
them with weapons and training. As it is known, in a recent terrorist
attack, which took place on October 18th 2009, right after the meeting
held between commanders of the Revolutioanry Guards Corps and Shhitte
and Sunni tribal leaders in Sistan Belucistan Province, senior
commanders of the Revolutionary Guards Corps have been killed.
Subsequently, the administration initiated the implementation of new
measures against dissident press and publication organs, which were
active on the internet. Within this framework special units have been
established within the Nirui Intizami Command and Sipah-i Pasdaran to
struggle against crimes relating to information technologies
(computers and internet). Moreover, a series of decisions were taken,
which imposed heavy sentences on those opposing internet crimes.
Abdussamed Hurremabadi, Detection of Computer Crimes Commission
Working Group Secretary, stated that they were determined to struggle
against illegal groups active on the internet through Revolutionary
Courts.
The recent incidents in Iran are defined in an article in the British
The Guardian as the most serious crisis experienced since the
establishment of the Islamic Republic. However, it is also expressed
in the same article that identifying the status quo with the 1979
Revolution would be a bit too much exaggeration. It is also stated in
the article that it is not possible for even the best Iranian experts
to make a sound assessment at this stage and that this crisis, which
has been going on in Iran for seven months now, make it necessary for
the US and Europe to readjust their strategies and targets aiming the
country.
