7TH YEAR OF THE OCCUPATION IN IRAQ AND FACTS |
|
Mustafa TOMBULOGLU
(Yorturk Cultural and Art Magazine March/April 2010)
In the 7th year of the occupation, basic facts and figures on the war are a total shame for the history of humanity. The US brutality in Iraq will be remembered once again on March 20, 2010. On this day people will talk about the fact that the blood freezing realities are much bitter than those served by the US media. The most important outcome of this war has sadly been the reconfirmation of the strong owns the right principle.
At the start of the occupation on March 20, 2003 and in the days that followed, aerial power was acknowledged as a determinant element of the new war style. Precise figures as to the death toll in Iraq are unknown. The number of those who were injured doubles the dead. According to records, the death toll caused by violent and non-violent means in post-occupation period has amounted to 2,3 million. A total of 600,000 people lost their lives in Iraq until July 2006, according to records. Currently there are more than 1 million widows in the country. About one of every 4 children has become an orphan while death rate of children under 5 is 2,2%. One of every 5 people has been forced to migration. Currently there are 6 million Iraqis who are in refugee status. The number of people living on the verge of starvation exceeds 4 million. At least 14 million people cannot drink sanitary water. The financial damage of the war is estimated to be 500 billion dollars. Millions of people lost their jobs. Homes of thousands were destroyed. Hundreds of women were raped. More than half of the population suffered first degree harm from the war. Even those who did not suffer were psychologically affected in a very severe way.
Articles 55 and 56 of the Geneva Convention stipulate that the occupant is obliged to meet all basic needs (such as food, medicine etc.) of the occupied countrys people by using all means. However, what is seen in Iraq prove to be just the opposite. In the 1990-2009 period, 4,2 million adults and 1,8 million children under 5 lost their lives. These figures are close to the Holocaust in the II. World War. Nobel laureate in Economics, Professor Joseph Stiglitz notes that the Iraqi War cost 3 trillion dollars and that it had a seriously effect on the current global crisis. Yet, it is early to say that the US is trapped in a blind alley. Because the US is spending the savings of its victims i.e. the savings of world nations. Thus, the assumption that the US is paying for its bullets itself is a deception. Those who are trapped in a blind alley are the Muslims who were killed and whose cities were destroyed. According to statements, it is the first time since the occupation began that Iraqi civilian and US military losses reached their lowest level. Bomb attacks causing mass casualties has escalated however. There are concerns that acts of violence could increase with the US withdrawal as of 2011. According to research results of the human rights organization Iraq Body Count, last year 4,497 people lost their lives due to armed attacks and similar reasons. US death toll is very low since American territory is so remote from the battlefield. The US death toll is close to 4,700 since the occupation, according to information.
The Turkmens who are important for Turkey have faced many tragic events in the last six years. They however had believed that they would be relieved very soon once the regime was toppled. Now, in Kirkuk, Turkmens myriads of square kilometers of land are under the control of Kurdish groups. Historical artifacts the region have been ransacked. No solution is introduced to the applications made. Many people have immigrated due to oppressive practices. It is known that efforts are undertaken to control economically and strategically important regions and to make the change in the demographic structure permanent. In view of all these developments we can say that political dynamics in North Iraq will undergo a radical change. However, an important part of the population sees this situation as concerning rather than hopeful for Iraqs future. Because the US had claimed it was bringing democracy when it occupied Iraq. Killing millions of people served and will serve democracy (!)
