HORRENDOUS MURDER IN NORTHERN IRAQ |
|
Kurdish region of Iraq has been shaken by a horrendous
incident lately. Journalist Serdest Osman, who is a student in the
Letters Faculty of Selahaddin University, has been found dead and
decapitated near Mosul. This incident has raised a discussion in the
region for not only being an ordinary murder, but also for its
political dimension.
According to the news of the New York Times, Serdest
Osman has published an article entitled I am in love with Barzanis
daughter in December 2009 issue of a newspaper. Osman told in his
memos, which has been found after his death, that there were death
threats against him and that he informed the Irbil Police about these
threats. It has also been emphasized that, Osmans statement regarding
that he has voted for the Goran Movement in the elections for the
Kurdistan Regional Parliament and the Iraqi Parliament, made him a
target. The eyes turned to the DPK as a result of holding the DPK
responsible for Osmans murder in the internet site of The Kurdistan
Post. After these developments the brother of Serdest , Besdar Osman
claimed that his brother has been killed under the instruction of the
ruling party. On the other hand, finding Osmans corpse near the PUK
Office in Mosul has been interpreted as a game of the DPK to put the
blame of this murder on the PUK.
Karvan Salihs, who is the member of Goran
Movement in the Internal Commission of the Kurdish Regional
Governments Parliament, claims against DPK on Osmans murder are in
support of the claims against the DPK. Salih claimed that there were
11 check points between Irbil and Mosul, and that it raised suspicion
how Osman was being passed from these checkpoints without having any
trouble after being kidnapped from Irbil to Mosul, therefore the
vehicle which transported Serdest was an official vehicle which
belonged to the Regional Government.
The reactions have risen as a result of Kurdish
Government officials and Security Forces failure to make a statement
and to make inquiries on this incident. Therefore hundreds of
university students, which are gathered in front of the regional
parliament, are waiting for this incident to be enlightened. This
recent incident shows the dangerous extent of the human rights
violations and the pressures implemented upon the journalists in the
Kurdish region. It is a wonder what Mesud Barzani will do against
these accusations and whether this incident will be covered like other
assailant unknown murders.(www.alwathika.com)
