CORRUPTION CLAIMS SHAKE THE GOVERNMENT IN ISRAEL
News1Israeli Government is having hard times. The eventual fiasco of the operation against the aid flotilla to Gaza has not covered the corruption of the Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. Israeli people are now arguing how a minister, who is drowning in claims of bribery and corruption, can manage an emerging international crisis. The Israeli Public Prosecutor is preparing to bring a new action against Minister Lieberman upon the advice of the police. Lieberman is going to be tried for “misusing his position and fraud”, on the suspicion that he has reached certain confidential files related to the corruption investigation about him. The police recommends that an action should be brought against Zeev Ben Ariye, the former Israeli Ambassador to Belarus, on the suspicion that the might have transferred the files to Lieberman.

Lieberman has not yet made a satisfactory statement against the allegations. While his assistants said that “there is nothing to be excited for”, they accused the police of “acting in haste as usual.” Apparently, the deep divergences between the Israeli Police and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will emerge in the coming period.

Corruption claims has been a topic that the Israeli people are accustomed to. In 2008, claims of corruption and bribery dragged the then Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to resignation. Olmert was accused of giving approval to a luxurious housing project named Holyland in return for a million dollars when he was serving as the Mayor of Jerusalem and the Minister of Industry. The police claimed that the amount was not 1 million but 15 million dollars in the Holyland case. Several connected individuals were detained. The claims about Olmert were not limited to this. The former prime minister was accused of receiving money from an American Jewish businessman prior to the elections and charging the state with 92 thousand dollars for the visits he made with his wife. It is amusing that Olmert’s pictures were hung all around Israel, on a “Wanted” sign.

The Israeli Government tended to initiate a campaign in 2009 so as to facelift its damaged credit. An additional source of 2 million dollars has been allocated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the said campaign. The campaign was supposed to start with face-lifting activities particularly in the fields of information and culture In this context, it was planned to send well known Israeli writers and artists abroad to open exhibitions, thus presenting the “cute” face of Israel. Moreover, Israeli military forces were requested to tidy up their attitude and behavior. However, nothing has changed despite all these efforts. Israeli soldiers were wearing t-shirts having photos and slogans that were making fun of dead Palestinians. “The Israeli army appreciates ethic values the most in the world,” comically stated the Chief of General Staff Askenazi against the reactions.

Nowadays, the Israeli people are paying the price of the mistakes done by unreliable and incompetent ministers in the cabinet after the Gaza crisis. The responsible ministers are expected to resign as soon as possible.
