ISRAELI PEOPLE DO NOT TRUST THE GOVERNMENT
News1The repercussions of the attack carried against the aid flotilla to Gaza by the Israeli Security Forces continue in the world public opinion. While Israel has shown its ugly face with this action once again, the reactions it receives lead the country to isolation. Now, the Israeli people severely criticize their own government. Some non-governmental organizations based in Israel announce support messages for aid to Gaza. Meanwhile, there are deep dissidences between the Israeli government and the opposition wing. The officials of the Kadima accuse Netanyahu Government of “stalemating Israel and mismanaging the crisis”.

The criticism in Israeli media about the violent attack against Turkish vessel carrying aid to Gaza is intensifying. They state that Gaza people have as equal sovereignty right as Israelis, including in territorial waters. It is emphasized that the aid vessels came to defend an issue, such as the “Freedom for Gaza”, recognized legitimate by the whole world, and the government which sent the soldiers to the vessel and does not recognize the rights of another country should be blamed. Part of the media suggest that the government has to review some of its policies in order to get rid of its image of an “occupant” and make an essential change in its foreign affairs and security politics. Meanwhile, some finds boycott calls against Turkey as exaggerated and also some argue that Turkey is not an enemy.

The Israeli sourced daily Maariv exposes the disturbances among the Israeli people in some figures. The results of the inquiry done by the newspaper are as follows:

To the question “Should the flotilla have been stopped with other ways?” Yes: 67.7%; No: 31.7%, Undecided: 5.6%

To the question “Who is to blame for the operation?” Defense Minister: 43.4% Army: 20.8% Prime Minister: 16.1% Undecided: 8.4%

It is stated in the survey carried out by the University of Haifa prior to the vessel raid that the relations between the Jewish and Arabic communities in the country have worsened in the last 10 years, and unless the government adopts a new policy in regard with ensuring equal rights for both communities, this unfavorable course will continue. Also, the survey stated that the ratio of the Arabs who are not happy with living in Israel has risen from 35% to 48%, and that of those who do not want to make friends with Jews from 16% to 29%, and that the ratio of the those who are convinced that the state treats Arabs equally has fallen from 63% to 50%.

The reaction shown by its own people to the humanity crime committed by Israel in international waters indicates that the government has to review its foreign policy immediately, because both the world public opinion and the Israeli people do not hide their disgust with the government’s violent tendency.(www.nasiriyah.org)
